Description

This exercise targets most muscles in the lower body, including your quads, hips, outer thighs, glutes, and calves. It also engages your abs. The main muscles worked are the glutes. Lateral lunges are safe for beginners and can be done with your own bodyweight as well as with a barbell or dumbbells. Along with the squat and walking lunges, this is one of the best leg exercises out there.

How to do it

  1. 1Stand up straight with your feet shoulder width apart.
  2. 2Grasp your hands at chest level.
  3. 3Lift your right leg and step to the side. Bend the knee. Shift your weight on the right foot. Keep your abs contracted.
  4. 4Hold the tension in the side leg and then return to the starting position.
  5. 5Repeat on the other side.

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Raising your heels
